It is expected that all students on medication will take their required dosage at home before and/or after school hours. In cases where it is absolutely necessary for a student in grades preK-12 to take medication during the school day, the following procedures are in effect:
- No teacher or other school employee except the school nurse may administer any
medication to a pupil.
- Medications are to be brought to the school in a pharmacy-labeled
bottle/container by the parent or guardian and given to the school nurse for safekeeping.
- The parent or guardian must provide a written order to dispense the specific
medicine from the prescribing physician, specifically stating the dosage for each medicine to be delivered (including time and amount of medication). The parent or guardian will provide a written request for the school nurse to administer the medication.
- Grades 9-12: Medication(s) in pharmacy-labeled container(s) may be brought to
school by the student or parent/guardian and given to the school nurse
- For short-term medications, i.e., those requiring administration for ten or fewer
days, the pharmacy-labeled container may be used in lieu of a licensed prescriber’s order. If the school nurse has a question, he/she may request a licensed prescriber’s order
- All medicines shall be kept in a locked storage area accessible to the school nurse
- When the school nurse is not in the building, a parent or guardian, or the
designee of either, will be expected to come to school to administer the medication to the student
- All of the above procedures apply to prescription and non-prescription
medications
- A new written physician’s order is required at the beginning of each year
